Where we work
We work in the US Arctic, from the Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea north to the shelf waters of the eastern Chukchi and western Beaufort Seas, as well as the Chukchi Borderlands. We also work in the northern Gulf of Alaska, and have had short-term projects in Behm Canal (near Ketchikan, Alaska).
The research we do
We primarily deploy two types of passive acoustic sensors:
- Recorders deployed on subsurface moorings throughout the Bering, Beaufort, and Chukchi Seas, as well as in the Gulf of Alaska. They autonomously record underwater sounds for a year at a time.
- Sonobuoys for shorter-term, real-time, passive acoustic monitoring from vessels.
We also occasionally use towed arrays and have deployed sonobuoys from aircraft.
